This talk will, of necessity, be a broad brush account of the history of medicine focused on how we changed our understanding of humanity and human beings, of tragedy and of responsibility.

Objectives

1. To understand how the gospel changed our understanding of humanity and laid a duty of care for the needy on Christians.
2. To see how the 13th century crisis of theological understanding combined with Occam’s razor, started the scientific revolution.
3. To see how the emphasis on measurement sidelined moral truth and led to physicians who cannot see why doctors should be allowed to say “No” to killing patients.
