Drs. Slusher and Thacher will share their personal stories of how they developed their interest in research. They will provide a step-by-step approach to developing a research project, fostering collaboration, and obtaining resources to develop research capacity, including pitfalls to avoid. The benefits and motivation for research include improving care, strengthening local capacity, and building credibility. Discussion and practical exercises will expand the participant’s vision for research opportunities in low resource settings.

Objectives

At the end of this session, the learner will acquire a basic foundation on how:
1. To develop a research project that addresses locally relevant problems
2. To include research within residency education
3. To engage international and local collaborators with research expertise
4. To obtain resources and grants to develop research capacity
